Collecting We talked already of active devotion. Of course one aspect of collecting is the pleasure of chance finds such as the rare old Carette station acquired at an exceptionally reasonable price. Of course we sometimes share the mentality of the shrewd horse trader, who can afford the thoroughbred on the market and is determined to buy it, but for now he comments on the horse`s crooked back, the somewhat lack lustre appearance and he expresses doubt about the teeth, to question the price demanded. The scenario at the model railway exchange fair is not that different: the large HO locomotive from 1952 has unfortunately two exceptionally ugly scratches, a step is missing, and mechanically it does not run really smooth; should this not be reflected in the price? So much for the active scene. The devotion aspect is however what distinguishes the true collector from the greedy investor: The collector is interested in far more than the price of his treasures. The costs involved are a necessary evil.
